Tesla Toybox Custom Wrap: The Complete Guide (2026)

Paint Shop in Toybox lets you see your car in a different colour. What is less widely known is that it will also show an image you made yourself — and the rules for that image are simple, except for one thing: the car rejects a bad file silently. Break any rule and it does not appear, with no error to tell you why.

This is the whole rule set, and the order to check things in when a wrap does not show up.

What the car accepts

Transparency is preserved, so a clear background leaves just the shape of the car.

File names catch people out most often. Satin_black_modely.png works. my wrap (v2)!.png does not.

Option 1 — upload from the app

On a car running recent software you can upload straight from the Tesla app. It is the simpler of the two routes.

Option 2 — install from a USB drive

For cars without app upload:

1. Format a drive as FAT32 or exFAT. NTFS is not read.
2. Create a folder named exactly Wraps at the root — spelling and capitals as written.
3. Put your PNG files inside, up to ten.
4. Plug it in and open Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps.

Avoid sharing a drive with dashcam recording. Dashcam use keeps the drive busy; a small separate drive saves trouble.

When nothing shows up

The car gives no reason, so work through the likely causes in order.

1. File name — brackets, exclamation marks, non-Latin characters, or over 30 characters.
2. Weight — designs with several photos pass 1 MB easily. Use fewer layers or fewer photos.
3. Dimensions — it must be square, between 512 and 1024 px.
4. Folder name — Wraps, not wraps or Wrap.
5. Drive format — NTFS is not recognised at all.
6. Slots — if ten are already loaded, an eleventh will not appear.

Making the design

The editor here handles the rules for you: exports are 1024×1024 PNG, and selecting several designs and choosing Export to USB (zip) builds the Wraps folder structure for you. Unzip onto the drive and it is ready.

While the drive is out, the same root takes a LicensePlate folder for the graphic behind the number on the Paint Shop screen — the plate background maker sizes one and hands it over as a zip.

If you would rather settle the colour first, these two carry well on a daily driver:

• Satin black — the most-installed finish, and forgiving about fingerprints and water spots.
• Nardo gray — quiet, but clearly not a factory colour.

A note on copyright

Putting a design on your own car is one thing. Publishing or distributing a design built from an anime character or a brand logo is another. Original artwork, or colour and pattern work, keeps you clear of it.
